Google Summit Learning Story - August 2015

Anjli, Taanvi and Jasmine made us all proud when they represented us at the first ever Student Google Summit on Aug 12 at Hobsonville Point Primary School.  They were joined by hundreds of other learners from around Auckland and facilitated and participated in some exciting workshops about learning with digital technologies.  There was a lot of work leading up to this day.  First, Anjli and Taanvi met with Ms Wilkes to express their interest, brainstorm what they could present and then write and submit their pitch to the GEGNZ.  They demonstrated passion, commitment and skills while meeting their deadline.  This was their pitch: Using GAFE in our Learning Adventures We are going to be talking about our google drive, docs, slides, sites and much more. We will also be sharing with you all the stuff that we use on our devices for learning. We are lucky to have BYOD and lots of school devices. Our Learning Coaches use Teacher Dashboard to share docs with us which is really useful. We would like to share with you some examples of our learning. Come to our session if you would like to join us on our learning adventure!!! They were of course successful and were added to the programme.  They then had to create their presentation and included lots of videos and interactives like padlet.  The learners decided it would be great if they could practice their workshops the day before to iron out any crinkles and so they were able to facilitate their workshops for the rest of the habitat.  On her own as Taanvi was unwell, Anjli (amidst massive technical difficulties) persevered in her practice run with a group of 15 learners and responded to feedback,making some small changes to improve their presentation.  On the big day Jasmine demonstrated capability and collaboration when she offered to support Anjli with her presentation as Taanvi was still unwell.  Jasmine and Anjli demonstrated confidence and resilience when many devices couldn’t access the internet.  We were very proud of the way they solved problems, remained calm, positive and supported the participants.  Way to go girls!

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

The girls showed they could relate well with others both in their collaborative effort in creating and facilitating their presentation and in responding to feedback.  They participated and contributed, managing themselves in 3 other sessions on the day and took their learning back to OrmPS to share with others.  They showed curiosity in the google cardboard session and made connections to prior knowledge.  They were capable at solving problems when there were technical difficulties and constantly collaborated to maximise their own learning and that of others.

My GAFE Trip

On the Wednesday on Week 4, some LH1 students went to the Google Apps for Education summit. They did a really good job on it. It was oresome. 

We first headed on the bus and took off. It took us nearly 1 hour to get there and plus also, our bus came late.

We arrived at Hobsonville Point Primary.

There were nine presenters from our school that would present one workshop each. Our people were Ashmira, Johanna, Jessica, Aleena, Kavisha, Anjli, Divya, Aryan and me.

It was really fun to see some amazing things they do and how nine presenters from our school were able to present.

Anjli and I were in the second block. Anjli's buddy, Taanvi, couldn't come so I was Anjli's new sidekick. Anjli did the talking while I deal with TV. I did speak in some parts. Anjli and I's presentation was about Google Apps and how we use google. We talked about, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sheets, Google Drive and Google Sites. Those were the Google apps that we talked about. We didn't get to finish all of the slides so we gave them the website to go to and once they type it in, they are able to get to the slide so they could read and answer the surveys for themselves at home. Anjli and I had the older students from different schools. Not even a student from Ormiston was there!! But it was still fun!

We also each got our own Google Goodies Bag. It had a information sheet with the map of the school, a pen that wrote black ink, a mini notebook that also came with a mini pen and a laryard with a place to put in our names. It came with a cut piece of cardboard for you to write your name yourself and put it on.

Morning tea and Lunch were pretty short. We did get to play for a short time on the playground. We all also got these like bread bites in Pizza flavoured also from our Google Goodies Bag. They were yummy!! 

We all had our four workshops to go to. Me and Anjli were in the same workshop together for every single one of them. Even our presentation we did..

At the end of the day, we had a prizing giving draw. Anjli was the only one who won something from our class.

We headed out and took some pictures and we got onto our bus again. 

When we arrived at school, everyone was gone and our teacher said to wait for our parents to come get us. Me and Anjli had to walk home. When I arrived at home, I was tried and I felt like I just wanted to sleep for the whole day and not wake up.

At the end, it was really fun at the GAFE summit. My favourite workshop was the Google cardboard one and photospheres. Mostly my favourite was the Google cardboard because when you look inside the eye part, you put in you phone after you download the app and when you look inside, it looks amazing. It looks like your in a way different world and you could also play the games that are in the app.

The GAFE summit was really fun and I really enjoyed it!!

 

Ormiston's Zoo Trip

Ormiston's Zoo Trip

Ormiston's LH1 learners went to Auckland Zoo where there are a lot of different species of animals. My favourite animal was the elephants.

When we arrived, we split into groups. I was with Mrs Dillner (one of our learning coaches). 

We had pretty of time before our lesson to explore the zoo and then after our lessons, we had a little bit of time to explore the parts of the zoo that we haven't seen yet.

My group and I, first went to see the animals. We saw a lot of different ones, like the birds (my favourite bird was the Kea). We saw the alligator, hippo's and many more. The zoo was pretty big so there was pretty of room for the animals and also pretty of space to explore. 

We all then met up in the elephant enclosure. Before our lessons, we had lunch. There were a lot of birds around all of us. How our lesson was planned out was, each group will go with on of the zoo keepers. Then we would rotate until we all had three lessons. 

After our lunch and lessons, we had a little bit of time to explore the zoo places we haven't visited yet. My group and I went to see the monkeys. They were so cool. We still had time so we went to see the animals that we couldn't find before. After, we went to see the african animals. The smell was so bad!!!!

After, we went to our buses and went aboard. We drove back to our school and went back to class.

I really enjoyed our trip to the Auckland Zoo and I loved all of the different species of animals.

Maori Language Week

Maori Language Week

Week 2, at Ormiston, it is Maori language week.

On Monday, we had our two first iExperiences. 

Our first iExperience was with our Hapu Learning Coach and then our second one will be with another learning coach. Hapu groups (Hapu groups are groups with a learning coach that we started having from Term 2)

My Hapu group was called Kiwis. Our Hapu learning coach is Mr Dyer. 

We did singing together. We went over songs that we sing at Hui time and our National Anthem. Some of out team mates were able to stand in front of our group and sing some of the songs. The girls and boys had a go at singing the National Anthem in different parts. So the girls went first and them the boys went last and I must say the boys were pretty good at it. They weren't bad. After, the girls won. GO GIRLS!! 

Kiwis second iExperience was with Mrs Dillner. We had to use Pic Collage which is a app where we can put on photos and text and stickers to create our own collage. We had to be in a groups of three. Me, Taanvi and Anjli were together. We all had a book base on a topic. Our book was about animals. They had some pictures of animals with their name and Maori name. We had to pick which one interested us most and take a picture of it and insert it into Pic Collage. We then had to find the sign for it. My group did something different. We put our picture of our animal on Pic Collage and then we founded the sign for it on images and then we put it with it. 

Maori language week is #oresome. I have learnt a lot of new things and I have really enjoyed Maori language week so far.

Collaboration

Collaboration

At Ormiston, we are using the word Collaborative which is another word for Collaboration.

What does Collaboration mean?

It means to work together in a group. It's to include everyone in it and never miss anyone out. It would also go with Team work because you need to work together as a team.

On the first day of Term 3, Ormiston's LH1 learners tried their best in two challenges. 

The first one included us to take pictures and place them on Pic Collage. We had to work together to take the pictures and to complete the challenge. We worked together to count the chairs in the habitat and the cubbies.

The second challenge included the whole school. We had to work together to complete challenges that were different from the first ones. The best (and funny) one was when one of our team mates wore a eye mask while the others told that person where to go. From left to right and right to left. The aim was, if we touched one of the cones or the ropes or anything that are put under the ropes, we need to restart or give the eye mask to one of our other team mates.

I think using the word Collaboration for Term 3 is a really and I mean really good idea. It was really interesting to see everyone working together and using team work.

Jasmine's Maths Learning Story

Learning Area: Mathematics - Statistics

Learning Observed

Recently in Mathematics, Mrs Dillner’s Maths Group took part in the Census at School. This is an online survey open to NZ schools that teaches learners about gathering data and making samples of the submitted information. Everyone learnt some background knowledge about what a Census is, who does them and why we have them. We saw all the other schools enrolled to do the Census at School - Kavisha and Jasmine were very excited to see if their old schools were on the list. Jasmine and Kavisha worked together to complete the survey which asked questions about height, arm span, weight of school bag, how long it takes to get to school, as well as their opinions on topical issues like global warming to who might win the next Rugby World Cup. Kavisha was sure that Fiji would beat New Zealand in the Final later on this year! The girls got to use a new piece of equipment called a Newton Meter. They hung their bags on the hook of the Newton Meter and gave them a weight in grams. The survey asked for an answer in kilos and grams e.g. 2kg and 800g. This was a challenge for both Jasmine and Kavisha, as they had to try and use their prior knowledge of weight conversions e.g. 1000g = 1kg.

Jasmine and Kavisha collaborated exceptionally well together. They used their time well which meant they were both able to complete the survey in the time that it took other pairs to complete one (Managing Self). They demonstrated capability in using a variety of measurement tools including a tape measure, stop watch, bathroom scales and a Newton Meter (Using Language, Symbols and Text). Jasmine and Kavisha were connected learners, as they understood that the information they were providing was part of a nation wide experience that other schools were taking part in too. They should be able to use this to apply to the next real NZ Census in 2018 (Participating and Contributing).

Next Learning Steps

Show curiosity when answering the questions about topical issues e.g. global warming. What is it? Why is it included in this survey? Work on measurement conversions - cm → m → km and mg → g → kg.

BFG's Readers Theatre Learning Story

Learning Area: iDevelop - Reading: Readers Theatre

Learning Observed

The BFGs WALHT for the week was learning how to read with clarity and expression.  The group chose to do the reader’s theatre story “The Ant and the Grasshopper”.  They read the script separately and then together they chose their roles.  The group practice by themselves for two sessions and then performed in front of a learning coach to be given feedback.  The feedback they were given was to ensure their volume was loud enough for each member of the group to hear so they knew when it was their turn to read.  Once the group has practiced again they read in front of a camera.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

These learners were working on their capability to read out loud with expression.  They also had to ensure they were working collaboratively so all of the members of the group could hear when it was their turn to read.  The group showed their ability to manage self as they had to read along and not be distracted so they knew when it was their turn to read.
