Aleena and Jasmine's 3D Printing Learning Story

Learners: Aleena & Jasmine     Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: 21.9.15
Learning Area: Technology - 3D Printing
Learning Observed
Aleena and Jasmine chose to participate in 3D Printing during iExperience during Week 7-10 this term. We initially learnt about the Thinker’s Key called ‘BAR’. BAR stands for Bigger, Add, Replace. To practise, the learners had to pick either a pen, lunch box or tennis racquet to make a feature bigger, add to the item and replace something. The learners had as much creative license as they needed and then they reflected on how functional the item had become - could it still be used for its original purpose?
The next stage was to come up with an item that we use at school and repeat the BAR process. Aleena and Jasmine decided to upgrade the cubbies that the learners keep their bags in. They designed cylindrical lockers instead.
Aleena and Jasmine had to use the website TinkerCad to design their new and improved lockers. They had to use the pre-existing shapes to form their 3D model which was then printed out by our LH1 3D printer.
After analysing their printed model, the girls were able to write a description about who would use it, why they designed it and what its features were. They also spent some time reflecting on improvements and redesigning it on TinkerCad to show these changes.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Aleena and Jasmine were collaborative during this process by sharing ideas and coming up with other ways to show creativity (Thinking, Participating & Contributing). They demonstrated curiosity by engaging with the entire technology process of designing, making, redesigning and evaluating. Aleena and Jasmine were connected as they were able to show their learning in three different mediums (paper, digital and printed model).
Next Learning Steps
  • Complete the second design on TinkerCad and print if time allows.
  • Use the 3D printer as a component of an iExplore.
  • Make a tutorial video to show other learners how to use TinkerCad.

Minecraft!

Minecraft

Minecraft is a cool app where you can build houses, farms and many many more.

Minecraft is also a app where it can be useful. If you wanted to build a habitat you can using the blocks or a model of your house in the future.

There is two settings. Survival where you can fight zombies and many bad infected people. You have to kill the animals to get food.

In Create, you can explore your land and also you can build your houses in green areas.

My other favourite setting is flat so you can build your world!

Thank you for reading my Minecraft blog post for Week 10!

Here is a overview of my Minecraft house that I'm still working on:

Loud Shirt Day

At Ormiston Primary on Week 9's Friday, we had Loud Shirt Day.

That day is when we could wear a loud shirt to support the deaf.

Nearly all of our students were wearing loud shirts. There were bright colours and patterns.

I was wearing a bright orange shirt with a heart pattern and I also wore a black light jacket.

All of my friends wore colourful shirts. We all wore our jumper but I took my jumper off because I was wearing another jacket under.

It was amazing to see everyone wearing colourful shirts! Even the little ones were wearing loud shirts. They were running around and the pop of colour really shined!

Even the learning coaches were wearing bright shirts. Mr Dyer was really funny looking and Mrs Dillner looked really pretty.

Loud shirt day was really fun because, one, we were able to wear bright shirts but the sad thing was that we were not allowed to wear different pants or something. Two was that, it was fun to see the little ones and the learning coaches in bright shirts too and three is that, we all had fun!!

I really enjoyed Loud Shirt Day! Thank you for the learning coaches for planning this for us!!

Exploration Lite

So, Minecraft is a favourite to everyone. Minecraft gets everyone hooked.

The simple game that is the same as Minecarft but has different features is Exploration Lite.

You can build many things and you even get water and lava blocks. You place that block somewhere and then you hit a button on the right.

There are many ponds, rivers and lakes in the game and also, huge pieces of Earth where you can climb.

Now, real Minecraft is better but for me, I like starting easy so I play Exploration Lite but, if I want to fight zombies and that, I would play real Minecraft.

In Exploration Lite, there are three settings. Earth, Flat and Flying Blocks.

In Earth, you can explore the whole area and there are lakes and ponds. And with the ponds, you can build a pool!

With Flat, you can build your own world. House and many many more that you imagine.

And lastly, Fly Blocks. It's a bit cray-cray there. There are blocks all around you no if you fall off the edge, you come to the same place over and over again. All of the blocks are floating and you can even jump on them!!

So, remember, if you want to play Minecraft but you don't want to spend $9 on real Minecraft yet, get Exploration Lite. It's for free. (Ps, yes, real Minecraft is for $9)

Thank you for reading my Minecraft blog post this week!

Here is one of my Exploration Lite creations that I made:

My 3 Book Review

Hi everyone! Today I'll be doing a book review on the series of Choose Your Own Ever After.

This series gets you to decide for one of the characters in the book.

Now, by the title of Choose Your Own Ever After, they mean that. You get to answer the question. For example, Would you let Frankie get her ears pierced? Yes or No? You choose. Just turn to the page that they said and read.

So, the book has more than one story in it.

My favourite book from the series is A Hot & Cold Summer.

Thank you for reading my Book Review this week! :)

My 2 Book Review

Hi everyone, today I will be doing a Book Review of the book called DorkDairies TV Star.

This is going to be my second book review.

It all starts when Nikki Maxwell gets a offer to be a TV star but it isn't going to be easy.

The camera crew keeps following her around home, school and going into her private space.

Nikki Maxwell also gets to go skiing. She has a lot of fun until. . . Someone pushs her down the cliff. She falls and falls until she starts doing really weird gymnastics moves.

At the end she wins the award and one of her meanest friends gets really angry.

Now, do I suggeste you reading it? Well, yes. It is a #oresome book to read.

Thank you for coming in and reading my blog post for Week 9.

Speech for Jahnavi

Speech for Jahnavi

So, on the 7th of September 2015, a lucky student from our school went to Papatoetoe North School.

It took about 15 mins to get there and also 15 mins to come back to school.

Jahnavi was so scared. I saw her legs wobble because she was that scared.

She had to go head to head with 11 other schools and many teachers and parents looking at her.

Mr McNeil, Anjli, Taanvi and I were sitting on the chairs waiting for Jahnavi to have her turn.

At the end of everything, we got to know all of the people that came in places.

The first place went to a speech about Teaching your parents how to use a Smart Phone.

The second place went to a speech about laughter and the third speech went to a speech about robots.

I'm really proud of Jahnavi for at least coming to the speech finals!!

Well Done!!!

Jasmine, Neha & Jahnavi - Author's Purpose Learning Story

Learners: Jahnavi, Neha & Jasmine    Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: 3.9.15
Learning Area: Literacy - Author’s Purpose
Learning Observed
Jahnavi, Neha and Jasmine attended a literacy workshop which was aimed at one of the Learning Progressions that each learner has on their Learning Pathway. We were looking specifically at how an author might use features on the cover and spine, in the blurb and in the text. The learners had to work together to analyse a text and identify why the author included these features and what they told the viewer about the text.
Jahnavi, Neha and Jasmine worked as a group on a variety of novels, connecting how the author may have used features that were the same or different on each text. They showed an increased capability in this when talking together about how the cover image, title, blurb and first page gave an idea of the theme and the author’s purpose. As they collaborated, each of the girls were able to extend their own knowledge by building on it with the ideas of the other group members.

Next Learning Steps
  • Finish a Best Fit Novel and analyse the Author’s Purpose after reading the entire book.
  • Record this analysis either in writing, video or audio.
  • Upload this as evidence in their Literacy Learning Pathways.
